The Film

BITTERSWEET is a documentary film-in-the-making that traces Sugar Pie DeSanto’s truly colorful life and career as a performer and songwriter who contributed more than 100 songs to American music.  It will explore her music inspired by her life experiences, and a career that has many ups and downs. Why, for instance, did Chess Records decide to withhold the release and promotion of many of her strongest songs?  In her journey, we will talk to Jim Moore, Sugar Pie’s manager of more than 40 years, who was finally able to obtain for her the rights to some of her own music. We will also meet other entertainers and music industry insiders who would affirm her important role in the world of blues and American music.
